What do you do with your photos after your photos are taken? HANG THEM OF COURSE! Therefore, I have been searching for unique frames to offer my clients. Capturing beautiful photos is only part of the process of displaying your photographs – You desire to show off your photos with a creative presentation! So I was super excited when a friend recommended I check out Lauren Dunn’s gorgeous frames. Lauren designs and handcrafts each frame. Most of the frames are a totally unique design. I love the textures, designs and beautiful colors she chooses. AND I feel like the frames are a GREAT compliment to my photography style.

So this fall I will be offering Lauren’s frames for sale at our mini-sessions on Oct 3 and Oct 17. The ready-to-hang frames will come with a print of your choice from your session. And for those of you with regular scheduled sessions, I will bring some examples to your session.

I have really enjoyed getting to know Lauren. Plus we have a lot in common… we live in the same area, are moms with two small boys and attend the same church in addition to sharing a similar art style and running a small business. So I’ve asked her to share a bit of her art and story with us…

Tell us a little about yourself.
Lauren: Well, I grew up in the Mississippi Delta (Greenville, MS) where there is a lot of flat land and cotton farms. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Delta State University, home of the “fighting ochra”…..yes, I’m serious, and ,yes, I loved it. From there I taught art in MS for several years until marrying my sweet husband, Nathan, which brought me to the Nashville area. I taught art here for two years until my first child, Stratton, was born. After him, I happily became a stay-at-home mom and had our second son, Parks, two years later. They are huge blessings and now are ages 5 and 3 and keep me super busy. Wow, that was a really simplified version of the last 30-something years of my life. It’s always amazing to me to think of the choices I’ve made in my life and how they have brought me to this point. One different choice and my life could have completely gone in a different direction…..such as, what if I hadn’t changed my major back to graphic design from physical therapy…I never would have taught art and married my husband or had these two boys. Simple choices lead to your complex life story. I’m so thankful for my choices and so very thankful for a loving God who has led my every step!
How did you get started in designing and handcrafting frames? What do you enjoy about it?
Lauren: I have always seen handmade items and had the thought, “Oh, I could do something similar to that.” I have always loved all of the distressed looking frames and I wanted one that looked old and eclectic. So, I made myself a frame and a friend saw it and suggested I make several and have a booth at the Brentwood Academy Market Street Festival. I did that two years ago and it went great. It was such a great feeling to know I had created something out of nothing and that people appreciated it enough to buy them! I love using my hands creatively, and I love seeing others happy and excited to find something that they love to show off their photos.

What inspires you?
Lauren: Oh goodness, so much. I sometimes can’t sleep at night due to all of the ideas running around in my head that start from seeing one simple image. Let’s see, I’ll name a few…..magazines (especially interior design magazines), fabrics (I am obsessed with fabrics. I love their color, textures and especially their patterns as I am obsessed with patterns!), nature, any old, architecturally interesting building such as a church, HGTV (ha), really good paintings, really good design blogs, great molding, and colors…..I could go on and on.

All the frames are gorgeous! And totally my style. How do you help people pick what would work best in their home? Do people buy multiples to display as a set?
Lauren: Well, thank you. It’s fun to help people decide which frame is best for them. A lot of times, people are just drawn to certain frames, whether it be because of the style of molding or the color. Other times, people need a little help deciding which frame would work best in their house. I think a lot of it depends on the colors in the photo. Certain colored frames work really well with certain photos. Also, the color of your walls is important. I like for things to pop, so I’m naturally inclined to put a darker colored frame on a lighter wall and vice versa. People definitely want frames in multiples as a set. If you have a large wall, I think 3 large frames on that wall make such a statement. You definitely don’t want something too small in a large space or it just gets lost and loses all of its impact. GO BIG and you won’t be sorry!

A person’s creative process always interests me because everyone approaches their work differently. Tell me a little about your creative process.
Lauren: Well, every batch of frames I make usually starts with a trip to Lowe’s, Hobby Lobby, and several, several, several junktique stores. I’m searching for unique frames I can take apart, unique moldings and great paint. After that, I give a list of the sizes of frames I need my dear hubby to make and he always does awesome with the miter saw. Once they are built, they each have a certain unique look. I can’t really explain it, but certain frames look like they need certain colors on them. I love color and I really give a lot of thought to the colors I choose. I try to keep them fresh and contemporary and in line with the personality of the frame.

Are all the frames different or do you produce sets that may look alike? How do you determine the end product?
Lauren: Most of the frames are different. At times, I will like a frame so much that I want to reproduce it, but, for the most part, I would grow bored if I kept repeating the same frame over and over again. Also, a lot of the moldings I use are antiques and really unique and I could never find that same one again. I do, however, produce them in groupings that work really well together. I’m not a huge fan of matchy, matchy so I prefer frames that are similar in groupings rather than the exact same frame repeated 3 times. It’s much more interesting to me that way.
What other types of art do you enjoy?
I adore painting. I love painting flowers, churches, birds, nature, really anything….except people. I’ve never really liked painting people. I’ve also started selling my paintings in my shows and in a few stores. So far, it is going really well. Some of my paintings I have put in my frames and they look really unique.
I’m a mom and I run my own business. So I’m always inspired by other women pursuing a similar venture while tying to maintain a balanced family life. How do you find balance? How does this creative outlet “help” you in other areas of your life? How is your family involved in your business?
Lauren: Well, if you saw my house right now, you might not think I maintain a balanced family life. Let’s see, on September 14th I realized I need edto make 150 frames by October 2nd. That is only two weeks, people! Can you say “stressed?” Needless to say, I’m gonna have to let some things go and usually that means my housekeeping, oh, and my cooking. I usually do my household stuff and running in the morning before lunch and then my afternoons and evenings are filled with me working in the garage. This time of year is great because my boys can play outside while I work. Of course, they need a little “positive re-enforcement” from mama every so often. They do go to mother’s day out a couple of days a week which really helps and my husband really pitches in when he gets home from work. My husband is my partner in crime and my biggest supporter. I couldn’t do any of this without his support. He really is my backbone…and he builds all the frames. I usually get really stressed before a show and work almost 9 hours a day for those two weeks right before. Lately, it has really been getting crazy, but I’ve really never felt so blessed or fulfilled, so bring on the craziness. Everything always finds a way of working out (even the dishes and dirty laundry).
So, toddler/ preschool boys… I have two of them like you and I SOOO desire to sit and do long craft projects with them. At this point our projects last about 10 minutes and end up in either a complete mess or a fight. Do you attempt craft projects with your boys? If so, what has worked??
I do attempt crafts with my boys and they love it, especially my oldest. I don’t do it as often as I should, but when we do, they have a blast. I have several times put out paint for them to paint on scrap pieces of wood and they feel like they are painting their own frames. They always say they are going to sell them. Another great craft is simply chalk while I’m outside working. I let them “decorate” the walls of their wooden fort outside and, of course, draw all over the driveway. My youngest son always loses his chalk, though, because he loves to eat it. I really don’t get that. We also love to take walks and find interesting leaves or sticks and bring them home to glue down on a collage.

Last month I had the opportunity to photography my sweet little nephew, Sawyer Moore :) I LOVE baby sessions because it reminds me how quickly babies change and grow. New life is a miracle and I am so honored that I get to capture this precious time. I also designed their beautiful Baby Announcements! I asked Stacy (Sawyer’s mommie) to share a bit of her story as a new mom and what it meant to her and Matt to have Sawyer’s photos taken:

Stacy: It was really important for Matt & I to have Sawyer’s pictures taken within the first 2 weeks of his birth because he’s growing and changing so fast that we wanted to be able to capture all the details of how he looks as a baby. We know that he won’t always be this little so it’s nice to have the pictures to remember the little things like the size of his hands and feet and how much hair he had when he was born. Sawyer did a good job for the photo shoot. Amelia worked with us on taking his picture at a time that was convenient for us. This helped me to not feel stressed out with a screaming or crying baby. Sawyer was also relaxed and at any point that he wasn’t Amelia let us take a break to get him relaxed again. This definitely helped make the picture taking process go smooth.

Stacy: I can’t tell you how many times I went over and over the pictures trying to pick out “the best one.” It’s hard for me to pick one single image that I like the best, which is why I went with a birth announcement that shows multiple pictures instead of just one single photo. Each picture was unique in its own way. It’s important for me to send out birth announcements because not all of mine and Matt’s family and friends could be here when Sawyer was born and by the time we get to see most of them he will have changed so much. With the birth announcements we get to show a lot of people what he looked like when he was born so when they do see him they can see how much he has grown.

Stacy: The thing that I have enjoyed the most about being a new mom is seeing my little boy change every day and take in his new world when he looks around. I love watching his personality develop and being able to hold him in my arms now instead of just feeling him kick inside my stomach. One of my favorite personality traits of Sawyer is how much he enjoys looking around at everything while making cooing noises. He also loves to have his hands free and can get very grouchy if they are wrapped up inside of the blanket. I love that when he sleeps he likes to have his hands above his head and has cute little snores.

I (Amelia) obviously had WAY TOO much fun picking out hats for Sawyer’s shoot. I found these on etsy. And I used a bean bag to get him nice and comfy in the photo above. We did some inside pictures which I LOVE, but of course I had to capture some creative ones outside too. Matt & Stacy were great at letting me run with a vision. Make sure you check out Matt & Stacy’s maternity photos too (click here).

Sawyer, I praise God for your life and look forward to capturing lots more photos of you!

This post features a beautiful custom family album I just had the privilege to design and deliver! I love albums because they are a precious keepsake and a great way to showcase a variety of photos. The Talley family wanted to highlight their little girl, Kendall’s, first 18 months. We did a photo shoot of her and the family every 4-6 months to highlight her changes (and her brother got in on the fun too!). It is such an honor to watch children “grow” through the lens of a camera. It is so amazing how quickly they change!

I’m super excited to be able to offer this beautiful product that documents those changes and will last a lifetime. My standard family album is 8×8 inches, 20 sturdy matte pages, with either a photo custom or fabric cover. The albums are gorgeous! I asked Kendall’s mom to share a little bit about what she thought of the album:

We initially wanted to order the album because we had one for our 4 year old, Jackson. We had his done when we lived in Memphis and it’s a good album, but nothing compared to the one we just got from Amelia!! The album that she did for us is awesome and captures our daughter’s year and a half so beautifully. So, after we saw her examples of albums…we were pumped to have one of our very own and not just to have, but to enjoy. The album is such a good depiction of Kendall. It’s girlie, cute, fun, and filled with the great pictures Amelia has taken for us over the 19 month period. We LOVE it and on top of being great to look at…it really is good quality. I don’t feel like I’m going to rip, tear, or hurt the album with all the viewing of it I do!

It’s very important that I have some thing I can just go to and see the pictures of Kendall from just born to almost two…there is such a change in her over the months and I’m so thankful I have one place to go to see all of them. Amelia really takes into consideration kids and how unpredictable they are. She’s always prepared with great help, great props, and even candy at times :)

Thank you Talley Family for allowing me to share this gift with you and capturing your beautiful family’s life moments.
